Testing for cointegration: power versus frequency of observation — further Monte Carlo results

چکیده
This paper studies the effects of increasing the frequency of observation and the data span on the Johansen cointegration tests. The ability of the tests to detect cointegration depends more on the total sample length than the number of observations. 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Why Frequency matters for Unit Root Testing
It is generally believed that for the power of unit root tests, only the time span and not the observation frequency matters. In this paper we show that the observation frequency does matter when the high-frequency data display fat tails and volatility clustering, as is typically the case for nancial time series such as exchange rate returns. Our claim builds on recent work on unit root and coi...
متن کاملOn the Power and Size Properties of Cointegration Tests in the Light of High-Frequency Stylized Facts
This paper establishes a selection of stylized facts for high-frequency cointegrated processes, based on one-minute-binned transaction data. A methodology is introduced to simulate cointegrated stock pairs, following none, some or all of these stylized facts. AR(1)-GARCH(1,1) and MR(3)-STAR(1)-GARCH(1,1) processes contaminated with reversible and non-reversible jumps are used to model the coint...
متن کاملTesting for linear cointegration against nonlinear cointegration: Theory and application to Purchasing power parity
In this thesis, we study a smooth-transition type of nonlinear cointegration among a dynamic system. Base on the Logistic Smooth Transition Autoregressive (LSTAR) models, the definition of cointegration which is extended form Engle and Granger (1987)’s definition of linear cointegration is introduced. Then statistical test for linear cointegration against nonlinear cointegration is derived. The...
متن کاملBayesian Markov Regime-Switching Models for Cointegration
This paper introduces a Bayesian Markov regime-switching model that allows the cointegration relationship between two time series to be switched on and off over time. Unlike classical approaches for testing and modeling cointegration, the Bayesian Markov switching method allows for estimation of the regime-specific model parameters via Markov Chain Monte Carlo and generates more reliable estima...
متن کاملBootstrap testing for the null of no cointegration in a threshold vector error correction model
We develop a test for the linear no cointegration null hypothesis in a threshold vector error correction model. We adopt a sup-Wald type test and derive its null asymptotic distribution. A residual-based bootstrap is proposed, and the first-order consistency of the bootstrap is established. A set of Monte Carlo simulations shows that the bootstrap corrects size distortion of asymptotic distribu...
